The majority of holiday detox articles focus on the aftermath of the season. But why not stay healthy all season long?! All it takes is a little self-control, compassion and determination. You may be tempted to over indulge, but the key is to RESIST, RESIST, RESIST! 🙂
However, if you do succumb to one too many slices of turkey, apple pie, or an extra glass (or two) of wine or egg nog, fear not! Here are 5 tips to help detoxify your body and get it back to feeling cheery and bright!
- Drink LOTS of water
Water is essential to any healthy lifestyle. Make sure you’re drinking enough to flush all impurities out of your system and maintain your body’s equilibrium. It is recommended that you drink 1 oz for every pound you weigh each and every day. I know that may seem a little daunting, but it’s so worth it! I personally like to infuse mine with berries, citrus, and herbs! My favorite combo so far has been cucumber, lemon, and mint. It’s super refreshing and tastes great! Just slice it up, throw it all into a pitcher before you go to bed, wake up, and drink throughout your day. I also highly recommend investing in an infusion bottle to tote around with you. It helps tremendously and makes drinking water fun!
- Incorporate detoxifying foods into your holiday meals
The holidays and delicious homemade meals go hand in hand. And it’s going to be a lot easier to incorporate some detoxifying foods into your dishes than you think! The key is to incorporate foods that will aid in digestion and boost your immune system. A healthy digestive system will more effectively remove toxins from your body and leave you feeling good! Kale, lentils, asparagus, garlic, and broccoli all help your digestive tract in one way or another. Almonds, raw vegetables and yogurt are also great snacks to keep stocked that will help you get from meal to meal. Be aware of when you are full to avoid overeating. - Get plenty of sleep
Did you know that your body cleanses itself while you sleep? Sleep is so important to any detox program because not only is your body repairing and rejuvenating itself, your liver is working overtime to cleanse your body of toxins and waste! Make time for quality, restful sleep throughout the holiday season and your body will thank you later.
- Don’t forget about your skin!
While the above tips focus mainly on what’s going on inside your body, remember to take care of the outside too! The skin is your largest organ and needs to be cleansed just like your insides! Taking time to really cleanse your face and body at the end of the day will make you feel refreshed and leave your skin looking brand new. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with tea-steaming my face every few nights and let me tell you, it leaves my skin feeling divine! If you’ve never heard of tea steaming, it’s basically just a facial steaming with various beauty benefits depending on the mix of botanicals you use. Begin with a clean, dry face. I like to cleanse with a charcoal based soap. Activated charcoal naturally pulls out impurities from the skin and most bars can be used all over your body. (WellandGood.com has an awesome list of charcoal cleansers here!) Next, pour boiling water over your tea and lean over the bowl so your face is directly in the steam’s path. Place a towel over your head to create a tent, preventing the steam from escaping. Relax and breathe in this position for 5-10 minutes and feel your pores open up and absorb the nutrients. After you’re done steaming, apply a detoxifying face mask, tone, and moisturize!
And last, but not least….
- Incorporate some Hot Yoga into your practice!
Whether you’re an avid hot yogi or still kind of intimidated by the whole idea, PodHot will seriously detoxify your body! We don’t just crank the temperature up to 100+ degrees for fun…Sweating is one of the absolute best ways to detoxify your body and the more you sweat, the more you detox. It’s kind of like a shower for your insides! Be sure to come to class prepared by hydrating with plenty of water and having a light meal at least two hours beforehand. Remember to bring a towel and water bottle to class. Each Pod’s schedule varies, but they all offer plenty of PodHOT, HotFlow, and HotVinFusion classes to choose from.
